Awang Hassan Politician

Tun Datuk Dr Haji Awang bin Hassan (November 1910 – 23 October 1998) was a Malaysian politician.He was born in Muar, Johor. He was educated by Sekolah Bukit Zahrah in Johor Bahru and continues his secondary at English College Johore Bahru. Awang began attendance at the King Edward VII College of Medicine (now the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of the National University of Singapore) in the 1930s. He worked as a specialist in Kandang Kerbau Hospital in Singapore before opening his own clinic.Awang started politics and made Deputy Speaker of Dewan Rakyat and Member of Parliament for Muar. He was the Malaysian High Commissioner to Australia after which he became the 5th Yang di-Pertua Negeri (Governor) of Penang, Malaysia from 1981 to 1989 attending the UN. Awang and his brother-in-law founded the United Malays National Organisation.Tun Awang married Toh Puan Khadijah Abdul Rahman, sister of Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman, the 2nd Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. He had four sons and two daughters.
