Elizabeth May Politician

Elizabeth Evans May OC MP (born June 9, 1954) is an American-born Canadian environmentalist, writer, activist, lawyer, and politician currently serving as leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich—Gulf Islands. She was the executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada from 1989 to 2006. She became a Canadian citizen in 1978, and stated in a letter to the editor published in The Globe and Mail in February 2014 that she did not retain her US citizenship.May's permanent residence is in Sidney, British Columbia. Her family home is in Margaree Harbour, Cape Breton Island. On May 2, 2011, she became the first elected Green Party Member of Parliament in Canada, defeating the incumbent Conservative Member of Parliament and cabinet minister, Gary Lunn.
