Erich Schaedler Football player

Erich Peter Schaedler (6 August 1949 – 24 December 1985) was a Scottish professional footballer of German extraction, who played as a left back. Schaedler was the son of a German POW.Born in Biggar, South Lanarkshire, Schaedler was signed at Stirling Albion and started his career at Hibernian after Willie Macfarlane became Hiberniam manager. Upon introduction to the managers office at Easter Road, Macfarlane's first action was to pick up the phone and call Erich, a player in his own mould. "Erich, I've got the Hibs job!"Right Boss!" "Come in and see me!" The first taste of first division football came when he was up against Jimmy Johnstone of Celtic FC."Boss, I am up against Jimmy Johnstone this week, what do I do?" "If you stand back and admire him, he will run rings round you! Let him know you are there!"Hibs beat Cetic that day in the middle of a run that still, to this day, stands as a Hibernian club record of consecutive victories.Macfarlane insists, though, that it was against Schalke 04 that "was the making of Erich Schaedler".It was at Easter Road that he would enjoy his greatest success, forming part of the "Turnbull's Tornadoes" side that won the Drybrough Cup then League Cup in 1972-73, and the Drybrough Cup in 1973-74. This side also finished second in the Scottish League in consecutive seasons.Schaedler was awarded his only Scotland cap during this period, against West Germany. He was selected in the squad for the 1974 FIFA World Cup but did not play in the tournament.Schaedler moved to Dundee in 1977, where he collected his final medal, for a First Division championship, in 1978-79. He returned to Hibs in 1981, playing for four seasons before moving to Dumbarton. Schaedler was still playing senior football when he committed suicide on Christmas Eve 1985 in the Cardrona Forest. He died aged only 36.
