He played for Adler Mannheim of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga from 2008 until the 2011-12 season. He previously played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues, Columbus Blue Jackets and Atlanta Thrashers. Brathwaite was named Deutsche Eishockey Liga MVP in 2009.
