Lázaro Cárdenas

Lázaro Cárdenas del Río (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈlasaɾo ˈkardenas]; May 21, 1895 – October 19, 1970) was a Mexican general and statesman who served as President of Mexico between 1934 and 1940. He is known for nationalization of the oil industry in 1938 and creation of Pemex, the government oil monopoly. His administration overhauled agrarian reform, initiated by the Mexican Revolution, and created the "Ejido" system in the Mexican agricultural sector. He granted asylum to exiles of the Spanish Civil War, and strengthened the educational system. These achievements, coupled with efficient political maneuvering, helped consolidate the rule of the National Revolutionary Party. Renamed as the Institutional Revolutionary Party, it continued to dominate Mexican politics and rule the nation through the 20th century.
