Mike Cooney Politician

Michael R. "Mike" Cooney (born September 3, 1954) was a Democratic member of the Montana Senate, representing District 40 from 2002 to 2010. He served as the President Pro Tempore. He previously served as a member of the Montana House of Representatives from 1977 to 1981, and in 1988, was elected as the Secretary of State of Montana, and was re-elected in 1992 and 1996. In 2000, Cooney ran in the Democratic primary for Governor of Montana, but placed third to Mark O'Keefe, who would go on to lose the general election to Judy Martz, and Joseph Mazurek. Following his service in the legislature, he was appointed as the Administrator of the Workforce Services Division at the Montana Department of Labor and Industry. In 2010, he was named as the Interim Director of the Montana Historical Society.
