Te Uruhina McGarvey-Tiakiwai Writer

Te Uruhina McGarvey-Tiakiwai (c. 1927) is a prominent Māori kuia of Ngāi Tūhoe and Te Arawa iwi descent. Te Uruhina was born in the Te Urewera region of the northeastern North Island of New Zealand.Te Uruhina is known for her many contributions to the Tūhoe and Te Arawa people. In 2009 McGarvey was awarded the Sir Kingi Ihaka award at the Creative New Zealand Te Waka Toi Awards in recognition for her "lifetime contribution to the development and retention of Māori arts and culture.In 2014 McGarvey appeard in an interview with Te Kaea Maori News which she spoke of Te Reo me ona tikanga. She is renowend for the encouragement she gives to the people of Ngāi Tūhoe to keep their Iwi customs and traditions strong.
