Barry Alvarez College coach
Barry L. Alvarez (born December 30, 1946) is a former American football coach who is currently the athletic director at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He served as the head football coach at Wisconsin for 16 seasons, from 1990 to 2005, compiling a career college football record of 118–73–4. He has the longest head coaching tenure and the most wins in Wisconsin Badgers football history. Alvarez stepped down as head coach after the 2005 season, remaining as athletics director. Alvarez served as interim head coach in 2012, after the departure of Bret Bielema, who left the program in December 2012 to take the head coaching position at the University of Arkansas, managing the team through the 2013 Rose Bowl. He served again as interim head coach in 2014, after the departure of Gary Andersen, who left the program on December 10, 2014 to take the head coaching position at Oregon State University, managing the team through the 2015 Outback Bowl. Alvarez was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2010.
